Trail Running

Trail running in Morzine and Lets Gets is now one of the most popular sports in the area. Recently, all of the trails have been newly marked and graded meaning it’s really easy to explore some of the best routes in the region. There are a number of really popular races in the area during the summer as well meaning it’s an ideal training ground for runners of all abilities.

If you’re new to the sport, you’ll be pleased to know that not all of the routes are horrendously steep or technically difficult. You could go for a run around Lake Montriond and explore some of the paths that link the lake with Montriond and Avoriaz. This is relatively flat and perfect if you’re just starting out. If you’re a more seasoned trail runner then you can be at the top of some of the most beautiful mountains in no time. Head up Vallee de la Manche and to the top of the Col de Cou for stunning views over into Switzerland. Try and run up Mont Chery in Les Gets for some hill training (the view of Mont Blanc makes the pain worth while) or why not try exploring some of the lesser known trails at the back of some of the smaller villages like Saint Jean d’Aulps or Essert Romand.

Races to look out for in Morzine:

  • Trail des Hauts Forts: Morzine 12th August
  • KMV (Kilometer Vertical): Morzine 28th August

The tourist office has produced a number of leaflets for trail runners which explain the route ranking system that is now in operation in Morzine and Les Gets. It also has a number of graded routes for you to try. The green routes are the easiest, running through blue, red and black which is the most difficult. There are also purple routes which mean steep verticle…they’re difficult routes but ideal if you have an event coming up with lots of climbing they’ll help you get the legs “hill ready”.
